Ancient Villages → New Towns

As the UK plans a new generation of new towns, Gbolade Design Studio look to the traditional Igbo villages of West Africa for an alternative model of growth.

Drawing on the Igbo compound, our director, Tara Gbolade’s article explores how housing can foster stronger relationships between people, community and nature. It argues that successful New Towns must deliver more than housing numbers: they should create adaptable, intergenerational places rooted in shared space, cultural identity and long-term stewardship.
